About
How it began
My journey with Art started as a child and I loved studying it all the way through school. I then went on to study Textile Design at Central Saint Martins in London, it was here that I developed a love of mark making and colour. I specialised in Print but my favorite part of the course was always the sketch books and mood boards, I loved using colour and texture and experimenting with pattern.
After I graduated from university my journey took on a slightly different direction. My husband and I decided to do some travelling and once we returned I became pregnant with our first baby. 3 more babies later and a blissful few years living in New Zealand we returned to the UK and settled in Edinburgh. It was once we settled here and my youngest child started Nursery that I finally had the time and head space to pick up my paint brushes again! I can't express how much it means to me to be able to paint again, I am loving every moment of it.
style and technique
i really love to capture moments when sunlight creates other worldly atmospheres through shadows and colour. Those minutes before the sunsets when the shadows are long and the whole earth can turn pink, or just before a storm when you’re stuck between two worlds with the storm on the horizon but with bright sunlight on the shore. To capture this atmosphere I begin my works with organic mark making and then move on the geometric shapes of semi transparent layers creating depth and interest.
I use small amounts of sand and grit from around Scotland and mix them in to my paint to give texture but also to deepen the connection of my paintings to their inspiration which is always the landscapes of Scotland.
